The Amsterdam City Doughnut: A Tool for Transformative Action

Organisation:
C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group, Biomimicry 3.8

This report applies the "doughnut" of social and planetary boundaries - a visual framework for sustainable development - to the city of Amsterdam, the Netherlands. It ultimately strives to analyse lessons learned and offer possible modeling techniques for further implementation in distinct regional contexts.

Amsterdam’s city portrait is presented through four main lenses – social, ecological, local and global. Combining local aspiration with global responsibility, the report identifies city climate areas in need of intervention and suggests resources to improve their conditions. In doing so, it is able to provide policymakers a starting point for a holistic policy design process that can induce a green transition for cities

Cities account for over 70% of GHG emissions worldwide; a systemic transformation of city energy use and sustainability approaches is necessary, and this document illustrates the implications of putting transformative action tools into practice.
