Barriers and Policy Challenges in Developing Circularity Approaches in the EU Battery Sector: An assessment

Resources, conservation & recycling

The EU battery sector is at the forefront of efforts to integrate circularity, driven by evolving policy frameworks and strategic initiatives. However, the implementation of circular practices in this sector faces several challenges.

This case study assesses the barriers and policy challenges that companies in the EU battery sector encounter in implementing circularity. By analyzing a sample of 20 companies through in-depth interviews, it explores the enabling factors and uncertainties linked to the EU’s regulatory and policy landscape.

The study also finds that while the EU’s revised policy framework and financial support can promote circularity, there are significant concerns related to data sharing, end-of-life battery management, and cross-border movement of batteries.
