The Best Practice Guide for Clean Energy Solutions in Municipal Water Infrastructure is based on lessons learned during the Climate Change, Clean Energy and Urban Water in Africa project, which aimed to empower South African municipalities to implement clean energy solutions in their waterworks. The corresponding Policy Brief makes recommendations to governments for cleaner energy policies related to municipal waterworks and their operations.
The Guide aims to provide municipal officials with the tools needed to make a case for and implement clean energy interventions in their municipalities. These tools cover technical, budgetary, and procurement processes. Through implementation of clean energy, municipalities can reduce their energy consumption at waterworks, lower operating costs, and improve long-term financial sustainability. This guide:
- Provides an overview of the data and information required to plan a successful clean energy project;
- Outlines the options for engagement with the private sector and the opportunities and challenges of private sector engagement;
- Presents a range of financing options that the municipality could choose to pursue to ensure that the clean energy project is implemented and operated sustainably; and
- Highlights key considerations to ensure that clean energy projects are implemented and operated sustainably.
