Biodiversity, Natural Capital and the Economy: A Policy Guide for Finance, Economic and Environment Ministers

OECD policy

Biodiversity is the basis for critical life-supporting ecosystem services that support human well-being, such as food and clean water. However, humankind is destroying nature at an unprecedented level.

For the G7 presidency of the United Kingdom, the OECD has published this policy guide for finance, economic and environment ministers on biodiversity, natural capital and economy. It acknowledges the importance of nature and biodiversity for the economy as well as the financial sector and provides OECD leaders with evidence for nature positive decision-making. G7 leaders have the opportunity to substantial drive change with large COVID-19 recovery funds available, and CBD COP 15 and UNFCCC COP 26 on the horizon.

The guide provides key findings and policy recommendations in the areas of mainstreaming and measuring biodiversity, aligning budgetary and fiscal policy with biodiversity, embedding biodiversity in the financial sector, and improving biodiversity outcomes linked to international trade.
