The OECD Local Economic and Employment Development (LEED) Programme recently undertook an international project on ‘Boosting skills ecosystems for greener jobs’ in four countries: Belgium (Flanders), Poland (Pomorskie), Greece (Attica) and South Africa (Western Cape). The project aims to analyse the local skills dimension of the transition to the green economy and to explore how selected local areas/industry clusters identify the specific skills needed to support green growth, and how related skills policies and practices can be made more effective in supporting and accelerating the transition to a green economy.
This report looks specifically at the work undertaken in the Western Cape (South Africa) in the aquaculture sector. The report highlights the need to scale-up support for the aquaculture sector in the Western Cape, in particular to help the greening of the sector. It also identified significant opportunity to streamline the permitting processes and institutional support for aquaculture, building on the successes of Operation Phakisa and other strategic initiatives being undertaken at national and provincial levels.
