Nature-based solutions (NbS) are increasingly recognized to deliver a wide range of socio-economic benefits and to combat climate change. They are perceived as a viable solution to meet objectives of several global environment agreements. To implement a just transition through NbS, the right mix of just transition policies are needed. However, there is no guarantee that NbS will generate decent jobs.
This report - co-developed by UNEP, ILO and IUCN - is the first in a joint global biennial report series that aims to fill knowledge and advocacy gaps on how transitions to a green economy will affect the world of work, and of the role that NbS can and do play in creating employment, especially for the poorest and most vulnerable people.
It gives an overview of the global policy context and the challenges and opportunities it has to offer. In addition to analysing current work in NbS, the paper also links NbS with decent work outcomes to develop a conceptual framework. Through this analysis, the report provides the unique opportunity to actually realize the full potential of decent work in NbS.
