FAO Carbon-balance tool

FAO's Ex-Ante Carbon-balance Tool for Value Chains evaluates the sustainability of agrifood value chains simultaneously along environmental, economic and social dimensions. The published guidelines aim to inform policy-makers, project manager, analysts and researchers.

The methodology's main focus lies on the GHG emissions along the value chain, but also includes factors such as the loss of food at each step of the value chain or youth participation. Its objective is to provide support in designing and evaluating agrifood value chain projects and policies by comparing the current scenario with baselines and a planned scenario. It gives an indication about the sustainability performance of a specific value chain and also identifies the relevant drivers for sustainability.

One of its most relevant contributions is that it provides an overview of entry points for environmental and socioeconomic improvements along the selected value chain.
