Global resource extraction has tripled over the past 50 years, threatening climate, biodiversity and pollution goals.

This briefing note supports the G20 Initiative on Bioeconomy by examining how trade and trade policy cooperation can advance a sustainable bioeconomy. In 2024, G20 members adopted 10 voluntary High-Level Principles on Bioeconomy, and South Africa’s 2025 G20 Presidency has prioritized their implementation.

The note also explores how trade policy can foster a nature-positive bioeconomy and identifies options for international cooperation.
