While the Sustainable Development Goal 5 recognizes the importance of gender equality, the overwhelming reality is that the 2030 targets will not be met unless the energy needs of women are addressed.
This report examines and provides a synthesis of the results of a five-year research project (2014-2019) implemented by ENERGIA, the International Network on Gender and Sustainable Energy, to provide evidence and analysis of the interactions between energy, access and gender.
The research programme, carried out in 12 countries, focused on five thematic areas: electrification; productive uses of energy; energy sector reform; the role of the private sector in scaling up energy access; and energy and related sector policy dynamics. The report aims to assist decision-makers in the public, private and voluntary sectors to combat the widespread inequities that exist in the use of modern energy services by men and women.
