The Green Growth Potential Assessment (GGPA) is a diagnostic tool developed by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) that consists of a combination of data analysis and stakeholder consultation in order to identify and prioritise a country’s opportunities for green growth. Based on these priorities, specific recommendations are developed, building on scientific evidence and successful examples from other countries as well as considering existing policy documents and technical analysis.
This report presents the findings of the GGPA for Myanmar. It reviews in detail the challenges and opportunities across a number of sectors, followed by recommendations for each of the green growth priorities.
While the country demonstrates huge potential for and active interest in green growth, the amount and scope of necessary reforms will require coordination across donors, civil society, and government. Through data analysis and stakeholder consultation, the report discusses the following green growth priorities:
- Improving natural capital management;
- Focusing on the provision of electricity from renewable energy sources and the potential of off-grid electricity for rural electrification;
- Increasing transparency in the mining sector;
- Establishing pollution controls and industrial waste management for sustainably operated, resource efficient industrial systems;
- Strengthening green growth policies at national and local levels and aligning them with a robust financial roadmap for urban development; and
- Aligning green growth objectives with national development goals.
