Nature-based solutions have been at the centre of multilateral discussions as an effective instrument to mitigate impacts of climate change. NbS offers the potential to address a diverse set of challenges such as climate change, food and water insecurity, disaster impacts, and threats to human health and well-being, while reducing environmental degradation and biodiversity loss at the same time.
Building on the multilaterally agreed definition of NbS at the UN Environmental Assembly in March 2022, this UNEP publication outlines recent developments in NbS, with a focus on global, regional and national commitments and key issues. It provides recommendations for actions by governments, civil society and the private sector to scale up the use of NbS.
