Nature, Wealth, and Power 2.0 (NWP2) is a framework that allows practitioners, planners, and policy-makers in a number of places to see the various interlinked dimensions of rural development, and develop and implement programs that are more successful and sustainable.
The challenges and opportunities of rural development have accentuated since 2002, and are more critical than ever. Global challenges include feeding a still-growing world population that is simultaneously adapting to and minimizing the degree of climate change, lifting billions of people out of poverty, and empowering marginalized and disenfranchised rural people. Information sharing and knowledge management tools have improved, and the world is more globalized and interconnected. While official development assistance has not declined, foreign direct investment by the private sector has increased dramatically and is now a much larger share of development resources. This investment must be leveraged to benefit local economies and avoid being extractive.
NWP2 aims to strengthen and broaden the impact of the integrated framework and increase its application. Broader application could mean less poverty and more resilience, development, and empowerment in the rural areas that are key to our common future.
NWP2 should be useful to planners, designers, and implementers of programs that aim to stimulate development in the diverse environments of the rural world. This includes agriculture, forestry, fisheries, wildlife, and extractive industries, especially in landscape and livelihood settings.
