Preventing Single-Use Plastic Waste: Implications of Different Policy Approaches

Single-use plastics constitute approximately half of global plastic waste generation. With the objective of constructing an effective policy mix, this report puts into question the prevalence of single-use plastics and provides a comprehensive analysis of waste prevention policies and their environmental implications. Highlighting the impact of volumes of waste generated, the research also focuses on single-use plastic consumer goods and packaging to contextualize policy initiatives.

To optimize sustainable consumption as well as waste management, sectors will require interventions with detailed targets. The efficacy of interventions depends on whether environmentally preferable substitute materials and products are available and enforced properly. The complexity of the plastics value chain calls for the application of multiple market-based, regulatory and voluntary approaches. Through case studies and theoretical frameworks, the research encourages informed and circular climate initiatives.
