Prospects for Aquaculture Development in Africa: A review of past performance to assess future potential

African aquaculture production has gradually increased over the years, but progress is still slow. Given large variations between African countries with regard to the availability of water, the macro-economic context, access to capture fisheries resources and other factors, the performance of African countries in aquaculture cannot be considered only by absolute production levels or contribution to GDP.

This study aims to provide fresh insights into structure and performance of the aquaculture sectors in Africa. The situations of countries are assessed and preliminary policy implications and indications of potential development investments in the sectors are indicated.
