In many countries, including the Dominican Republic, the tourism sector relies upon the nation's natural beauty and biodiversity, but also contributes significantly to negative environmental impacts.
This report from UNEP is a roadmap for a sustainable and resilient tourism sector in the Dominican Republic, based on an analysis of the local tourism value chain. It sets five targets for the accommodations sector:
- 25% GHG emissions reduction
- 50% food waste reduction
- 25% reduction of non-renewable energy use
- Complete removal of problematic single-use plastics
- Sustainability certifications for hotels
To achieve these targets, three systemic solutions are proposed over an agreed timeframe, relating to pollution reduction, sustainable food systems and sustainable energy.
