Sectoral approach NIPs link to GFC and CW Conventions

This report shows how National Implementation Plans (NIPs) under the Stockholm Convention can guide chemicals and waste management through a sectoral approach, aligned with agreements such as the Basel Convention, Rotterdam Convention, Minamata Convention, Convention on Biological Diversity, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Montreal Protocol, and Global Framework on Chemicals.

It recommends aligning NIPs with the GFC’s objectives to improve coordination across key sectors and strengthen the management of POPs-containing wastes, including through better-aligned POPs and plastics inventories to support a circular economy.

NIPs are also positioned as tools to advance biodiversity, climate, and SDG goals, promote green chemistry, and avoid regrettable substitution.
