This report examines hazardous chemicals in clothing, focusing on fluorine and PFAS used in dyes, coatings and finishes. Testing of over 100 garments from 13 countries found nearly two-thirds contained PFAS, which can leach during washing and contaminate water systems, endangering consumers, workers and the environment.
The findings call for greater supply-chain transparency, clearer labeling and stricter regulation to phase out PFAS. With safer alternatives available, international cooperation is needed to eliminate these substances and reduce the textile sector’s chemical footprint.
The report is directed to Stockholm Convention focal points, national officials, experts in chemicals and waste management, coordinating bodies, regional centres and other stakeholders engaged in safer textile production.
