Understanding Gender-based Violence in Critical Mineral Mining

As demand for critical minerals and metals grows globally, so do the social and human rights risks tied to mining especially gender-based violence (GBV).

Mining often takes place in remote, male-dominated environments where harmful gender norms and power imbalances thrive. This increases the risk of GBV  including harassment, exploitation, and abuse  for women and marginalized groups. 

This briefing calls for urgent action to address the deep-rooted gender inequalities in mining communities and workplaces that often fuel GBV.
