There are three waste disposal sites in Vanuatu. However, backyard disposal - where waste is either buried or burnt - is still in practice in most homes throughout the country, as many parts of the island nation do not have a proper and organized collection and disposal waste management services.
The results of this waste audit in Vanuatu - conducted by the Pacific Regional Environment Programme (SPREP) as part of the PacWastePlus Programme - are presented in this report.
The information and data gathered from the audit will be used by countries in the Pacific to support the development and monitoring of waste and resource recovery projects and recommend the infrastructure and policy interventions required. The regional dataset will also be used to identify and evaluate potential regional projects that would improve waste management in the region.
