the water footprint

This research paper examines the hidden water footprint of the global textile industry and how water is effectively traded across borders through complex supply chains.

It traces textiles from raw material production and manufacturing through trade, consumption and disposal, drawing on trade data, water-stress indicators and case studies.

The paper highlights how growing textile production can intensify pressure on water resources, particularly in vulnerable producing and waste-receiving regions, and identifies opportunities to strengthen water governance, supply-chain transparency and sustainable practices.
