Women, Girls and Biodiversity Loss: An Evidence and Policy Review

Women, girls and biodiversity loss_An evidence and policy review_IIED

Gendered differences and inequalities shape the ways women and men use and conserve biodiversity, and affect their sensitivities to biodiversity loss. In particular, gendered inequalities will mean that women, girls, people living in poverty, rural communities, sexual and gender minorities and Indigenous Peoples are differentially, and disproportionately, affected by biodiversity loss. This will detrimentally affect their human rights, including rights to life, health, food, water and sanitation, culture and self-determination.

Against this backdrop, this report identifies knowledge gaps in extant evidence on gender and biodiversity, identifies new evidence to fill the gaps identified, and develops policy recommendations and potential actions governments and other actors can take to address these issues. It also aims to provide insight on the differential impacts of biodiversity loss and environmental degradation on women.
