This report seeks to share understanding of the roots of plastic polymer pathways to the Baltic Sea, then moves to defining the nature and extent of the problem, then passes to the impacts on sea ice habitat and marine species of the region.

This research unlocks how some of the most successful waste organisations around the world have solved the toughest challenges facing poorly funded waste management systems.

The approach discussed in this report focuses on inventorying plastic flows into the marine environment only. It does not look at plastic releases into the terrestrial environment, or any ecosystem or human health impacts that may result from marine plastic leakage.

This study provides an insight into the impact of COVID‐19 pandemic on global and regional climate and implications for immediate actions to mitigate fast global warming.

This report is one of the first of its kind to quantify primary microplastics leakage and to demonstrate that these primary microplastics are globally responsible for a major source of plastics in the oceans.
