On 20 September 2023 (10:00 - 18:00 New York (EDT) (GMT-4) 13:00 - 23:00 Geneva (CEST) (GMT+1)), the UN Secretary-General hosted The Climate Ambitions Summit.
The Climate Ambition Summit was convened to showcase credible multistakeholder actions, policies and plans to accelerate the decarbonization of the global economy and deliver climate justice. Government leaders presented updated pre-2030 Nationally Determined Contributions; updated net-zero targets; energy transition plans; fossil fuel phase-out plans; more ambitious renewable-energy targets; Green Climate Fund pledges; and economy-wide plans on adaptation and resilience. They also presented implementation partnerships to accelerate the decarbonization of high-emitting sectors or to deliver climate justice.
UNEP contributed to preparations for the segment on decarbonisation, including net zero targets and critical energy transition minerals. Participants supported framing envisioned by the UNSG’s Initiative on Critical Energy Transition Minerals and some called for a UN-led effort to create a set of global voluntary principles on Critical Energy Transition Minerals.
