Embedding POPs Data Management: Information Systems at National and Regional Levels

On 28 October 2025 (15:00-16:30 CET), the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP), as a part of the GEF-funded and UNEP-led Global NIP Update project (GEF ID 10785), hosted a round table “Embedding POPs Data Management: Information Systems at National and Regional Levels.”

The event explored how persistent organic pollutants (POPs) information and data systems can be effectively embedded at both national and regional scales and how these systems can better support National Implementation Plans (NIPs) under the Stockholm Convention.

Objectives

  • Present project's guidance on key features for establishing regional POPs data management hubs. Present project's strategy for national adoption on medium- and long-term strengthening of the data management systems on POPs.
  • Exchange progress and experiences among regional centres and countries on existing POPs data systems, including demonstrations of current platforms such as POPs-RIS (BCRC-Caribbean) and RECETOX databases.
  • Discuss the nature of POPs data what types of data are collected, which can be disclosed publicly and how confidentiality concerns, including those linked to third-party industrial data, can be addressed.
  • Discuss the importance of data in supporting future NIP updates, regional reporting and evidence-based policymaking for POPs management.
  • Identify opportunities for collaboration among regional centres, UNEP, and countries to enhance the interoperability and long-term sustainability of POPs data management systems.
  • Promote stronger integration between NIP development and the research and technical community, including regional centres and laboratories.

  • Policymakers and data managers from relevant ministries and environmental agencies
  • Researchers and partners engaged in POPs monitoring, reporting and information management
  • UNEP, BRS Secretariat, and other GEF-supported project teams working on chemicals and waste data systems
