On 2 December 2023 (14:30-15:30 Gulf Standard Time (GST) (GMT+4) 5:30 - 6:30 New York (EST) (GMT-5)), the COP28 Presidency hosted an event titled Leaders Event: Fast-Tracking the Just, Equitable and Orderly Energy Transition.
Keeping 1.5 within reach requires us to cut emissions by 22 GT by 2030. This calls for collective action across government and industries both on energy supply and energy demand, while taking further action to limit temperature impacts in this critical decade. This event will convene governments, companies, and financial actors to demonstrate global and cross-sector commitments to scale renewables and energy efficiency, decarbonize heavy emitting and energy sectors, enabling the essential phase down of demand of fossil fuels. The event will also highlight comprehensive action on non-CO2 greenhouse gasses, in particular on methane, to unlock substantial near-term temperature impact.
