On 26 September 2023 (18:00-19:30/12:00-13:30 ET), Industrious Labs and RMI are hosting the webinar "The Low Hanging Fruit You’ve Been Missing: State-led Solutions to Tackle Dangerous Climate Pollution from Landfills, Create Economic Opportunity and Benefit Communities".

Reducing methane is the most effective near-term strategy to curb global warming, and landfills are the low-hanging fruit at the state level. US landfills produce over 295 million tons of CO2e annually, according to inventories calculated on a 20-year horizon as a result of organic waste (i.e., food, paper, yard waste) decomposing in an anaerobic landfill environment. The impacts of waste are both visible and urgent for the communities that live near landfills and suffer health and quality of life impacts from the air and water pollution. Fortunately, there are "low-hanging fruit" policies and strategies that can make a difference for the climate and community.

Join Gina McCarthy, former White House national climate adviser and EPA administrator, and engage with a “solutions” panel of practitioners and advocates to:

  • Examine the latest state-level emissions data and how landfills are easier to tackle than other sources of methane
  • Dig into regulatory approaches from leading states to cut methane emissions from waste-in-place, and the latest game-changing technologies
  • Learn how states can make the most of IRA federal funding opportunities to deliver emissions reductions and benefits for impacted communities
  • Explore policies that deliver powerful co-benefits, keep organic waste out of landfills and ensure the highest, most beneficial use of organic waste
