On 1 August 2024 (14:00-16:00 CEST), the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP) hosted the online webinar "Sectoral approach to inventories of POPs and other chemicals of concern in construction, electronics, and vehicles".
The webinar introduced the new 'Sectoral Guidance for Inventories of POPs and Other Chemicals of Concern in Buildings/Construction, Electronics, and Vehicles.' For the inventory and management of POPs, a practical approach is to compile POPs inventory data in a coordinated manner across the major sectors of their use. Considering the synergy with other conventions and international treaties, it is useful to coordinate information gathering on other chemicals of concern in these sectors and to understand their presence for coordinated and synergistic management. The guidance document has compiled relevant information and was presented in the webinar.
Objectives
- Provide participants with an overview of the development of industrial POPs inventories, including relevant inventory steps, sectoral guidance on POPs inventories, and other available inventory guidance documents.
- Differentiate between highly relevant and less relevant POPs in the major use sectors of electronics, transport, and buildings/construction.
- Inform about other chemicals of concern in these three sectors relevant for other Multilateral Environmental Agreements, and to lay a foundation for synergistic inventories of pollutants.
- Emphasize that inventories of POPs, other pollutants, plastics and resources in these sectors are crucial for waste and resource management toward a clean circular economy.
Target audience
- Stockholm Convention Official Contact Points and National Focal Points particularly from project countries
- National officials and experts involved in the process of reviewing and updating the NIPs
- Practitioners working on POPs inventory and management
- Members of NIP National Coordinating Mechanism/Committees and Project Coordination Units/Thematic Task Groups
- Representatives of Regional Centres and relevant stakeholders
