On 10 December 2020 at 11:30 am CET, the African Natural Capital Accounting Community of Practice is organising a webinar entitled "The shifting nature of South Africa's Landscape: a 24 year snapshot of land and ecosystem change".
Statistics South Africa has recently released the Land and Terrestrial Ecosystem Accounts 1990-2014, the first publication of its new Natural Capital Series. For South Africa, these accounts are first of their kind and they have been produced in the context of the Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES) project that was launched in 2017 by the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) with the financial support of the European Union (EU).
The Natural Capital Accounting and Valuation of Ecosystem Services (NCAVES) project sees the participation of South Africa together with Brazil, China, India and Mexico and it aims to advance the global knowledge agenda and promote the testing of SEEA Experimental Ecosystem Accounting.
In South Africa, the NCAVES project is lead by the Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) and the South African National Biodiversity Institute (DEFF) together with a range of national and sub-national stakeholders.
During the webinar, the approach, methods and results from the Land and Terrestrial Ecosystem Accounts will be presented.
The webinar aims to share with the Africa NCA Community information on the process and institutions involved in compiling the accounts, the approach to land and terrestrial accounts used in South Africa, key indicators and findings from the accounts.
