Trade and Nature: Trade-offs and Solutions - Biodiversity and International Trade Policy: Issues, Opportunities, and Challenges

On 20 Sept 2021 15:00 CET, the UKRI GCRF Trade, Development and the Environment Hub (GCRF TRADE Hub) led by the UN Environment Programme World Conservation Monitoring Centre (UNEP-WCMC) is hosting a webinar on “Trade and Nature: Trade-offs and Solutions - Biodiversity and International Trade Policy: Issues, Opportunities, and Challenges”.

The GCRF TRADE Hub organizes the monthly webinar series "Trade and Nature: Trade-offs and Solutions". The first webinar will focus on giving an overview of trade and environmental narratives within commodity and wildlife supply chains.

The webinar will answer these pressing questions:

  • How is global commodity and wildlife trade governed, and by which laws and policies?
  • What are the drivers and impacts of this trade?
  • How can trade rules play a part in mitigating biodiversity loss?
  • If some trade flows undermine progress on environmental goals, how can we make changes? 

Speakers:

Carolyn Deere Birkbeck, Director of the Forum on Trade, Environment and the SDGs (TESS), Founder and Board Chair of Global Policy Reporting, Senior Researcher at the Institute's Global Governance Centre, Associate Fellow of Chatham House, and Senior Research Associate at the University of Oxford's Global Economic Governance Programme.

James Vause, Lead Economist at UNEP-WCMC. He recently co-authored the Trade and the Biosphere chapter for the Dasgupta Review of the Economics of Biodiversity.

Zhou Mi, Deputy Director at the Institute of American and Oceania Study in the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation (CAITEC), Post-Doct in Fudan University, Visiting Scholar of Stanford University, Visiting Scholar of Korean International Economy Policy Institute.

Matheus Couto, Programme Officer at UNEP-WCMC Brazil. He supports UNEP-WCMC and UNEP Brazil Country Office on biodiversity, sustainable development and ecosystem restoration issues.
