On 8 November 2023 (16:45 - 18:00 Geneva (CEST) (GMT+1) 10:45 - 12:00 New York City (EST) (GMT-5)), IGF and UNCTAD hosted an event titled, Transforming the Extractives Industries for Sustainable Development.

It is imperative that the mining sector transforms itself into a sustainable system that contributes to the just energy transition. At the same time, the success of the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources will also depend heavily on the availability and steady flow of critical energy transition minerals. Given the surging demand and expected pace of extraction and processing of these minerals, sustainable transitions and relations between nations will become increasingly prominent.

The session will offer the opportunity for UN agencies, IGF member states, and key mining stakeholders to discuss emerging risks, challenges, and opportunities from critical energy transition minerals.
