On 11th February 2025 (13:00 – 14:30 & 19:00-20:30 CET), UNEP hosted a webinar on the Digital Knowledge Hub and its Online Communities of Practice, currently under development as part of United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) resolution 6/5 on Environmental Aspects of Minerals and Metals.
The webinar provided an opportunity for consultation with Member States, including National Focal Points nominated in line with UNEA resolution 5/12 on environmental aspects of minerals and metals management, and other stakeholders on the design and development of the Digital Knowledge Hub and its online communities of practice, to ensure they are needs-responsive and fit for purpose. The webinar provided a preview of the Hub and its intended Online Communities of Practice.
The Digital Knowledge Hub will provide access to information and best practices for enhancing the environmental sustainability of minerals and metals along the entire life cycle. Best practices will be identified through a desk review and contributions from Member States and other stakeholders. The platform is being structured around priority themes identified during the UNEA 5/12 intergovernmental process, such as policies, standards and tools, circularity, value chain aspects, mine closure, tailings, and sand; other themes can be added upon guidance from Member States and needs expressed by users over time. Additionally, the platform will reference and link to existing mining and mineral value chains databases and be interoperable with other related platforms. The Digital Knowledge Hub will also support capacity-building initiatives and facilitate global and regional collaboration, ultimately strengthening environmental sustainability of the minerals and metals value chains.
The webinar offered:
