Baseline Study for the Pacific Hazardous Waste Management Project - Healthcare Waste: Fiji

Organisation:
ENVIRON Australia

This report covers a review of data on the management of healthcare waste and its disposal, as part of a broader strategy of improving waste management in Pacific Island countries, and specifically to assist in establishing sustainable healthcare waste management. It presents findings of an assessment conducted for Fiji, including recommendations and a proposed implementation plan for each recommendation to achieve sustainable management of healthcare waste in the country.

Recommendations include the need for Fiji to:

  • Develop a waste management framework for sub-divisional hospitals
  • Make available procurement of consumables (segregation and storage)
  • Deliver the existing structured healthcare waste training program that is common to all divisional hospitals to all sub-divisional hospital infection control officers in Fiji
  • Improve treatment infrastructure that reduces the potential hazard posed by healthcare waste while protecting the environment
  • Deligate a person responsible for inter-hospital coordination, setting work programmes, prioritizing project actions (as they relate to Fiji) and monitoring progress towards improved waste management
