Baseline Study for the Pacific Hazardous Waste Management Project - Healthcare Waste: Kiribati

Organisation:
ENVIRON Australia

This report covers a review of data on the management of healthcare waste and its disposal, as part of a broader strategy of improving waste management in Pacific Island countries, and specifically to assist in establishing sustainable healthcare waste management. It presents findings of an assessment conducted for Kiribati, including recommendations and a proposed implementation plan for each recommendation to achieve sustainable management of healthcare waste in the country.

Recommendations for Kiribati include the need to:

  • Develop a healthcare waste management plan, specific to each healthcare facility
  • Make available procurement of consumables (segregation and storage)
  • Develop and deliver a sustainable structured healthcare waste training programme to all hospital personnel and personnel from other stakeholders
  • Procure new incinerators
  • Upgrade central storage facilities
  • Supply sufficient spill control kits for entire hospital operations in both hospitals
