This publication describes the concepts, data sources, and methods used in the development of the Canadian System of Environmental and Resource Accounts (CSERA).
A growing environmental awareness has led to demands for information beyond traditional measures of economic activity. In response to this demand, in 1991, the Government of Canada asked Statistics Canada to initiate the development of a system of environmental and resource accounts that would quantify the links between the environment and the economy. The CSERA is the result of this initiative.
The CSERA was developed using classifications, concepts, and methods that are compatible with those of the Canadian System of National Accounts (CSNA) in order to enable the statistics of the CSERA to be directly integrated with those of the CSNA. This represents a significant milestone in Statistics Canada’s capacity to assess economic activity and its dependence upon the natural environment.
