Ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation is increasingly recognized as a cost-effective and widely accessible solution to climate variability, particularly for the rural poor in developing countries. Such approaches include, for example, sustainable agriculture, integrated water resource management, and sustainable forest management interventions that use nature to reduce vulnerability to climate change.
Ecosystem-based Approaches to Adaptation in National Policy: The Cases of Nepal, Peru and Uganda provides an overview of international policy on ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation and presents the initial findings of research on the integration of such approaches into national policies and plans, focusing on three vulnerable countries with mountain ecosystems: Nepal, Peru and Uganda. The research assesses whether and how international policy guidance on ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation has been integrated into the national level development, climate change and sectoral policies, focusing on policy reviewing rather than in-depth analysis of political economy considerations. It is hoped that the findings will provide initial insights into how to integrate ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation into country-level policy-making, including National Adaptation Programmes of Action (NAPA), and implementation.
