The main objective of the present report is to document good practices and lessons learned on inclusive green growth from selected case studies in South Africa. The report contributed to informing the Fifth Issue of the Sustainable Development Report on Africa (SDRA-V) produced under the theme “Achieving sustainable development in Africa through inclusive green growth.
This report provides an assessment of the country’s experience in implementing inclusive green growth interventions. It discusses the overall policy framework and mechanisms for promoting IGG in South Africa and it also analyses selected case studies document good practices, key successes, challenges and lessons learned. The case studies analyzed are the following:
- National Solar Water Heater Programme
- Municipal Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management Programme
- Green Fund
- Industrial Energy Efficiency Improvement Project
- Energy and Environment Partnership Programme
- Working for Wetlands Programme
The following cross-cutting issues were addressed in the report - gender, climate change, employment (particularly for young people) and science and technology. The report is based on information gathered from literature and consultations with relevant sector departments and contacts. The results of the analyses inform the recommendations aimed at advancing the IGG agenda in South Africa.
