Mercury Management for Sustainable Development

The Minamata Convention on Mercury is a global legally binding treaty to protect human health and the environment from the adverse effects of mercury. Major highlights include a ban on new mercury mines, the phase-out of existing mercury mines, control measures on air emissions, and international regulation of the informal sector for artisanal and small-scale gold mining.

This brochure summarizes the interim results of UNDP’s work in protecting human health and the environment from mercury in support of the Minamata Convention on Mercury as well as illustrates linkages with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

It also covers the phase-out of mercury use in the medical sector and how to strengthen proper lifecycle management of products containing mercury, offering several case studies from Honduras, Uruguay, Tanzania and elsewhere.
