Strategic Environmental Assessment of Hydropower Development in Azad Jammu and Kashmir

This case study provides an overview of the role of strategic planning in Pakistan's hydropower infrastructure. The study illustrates the first of the ten International Good Practice Principles for Sustainable Infrastructure: Strategic Planning, documenting a Strategic Environmental Assessment of hydropower projects in the Azad Jammu and Kashmir region.

Based on the findings from the Strategic Environmental Assessment, this case study demonstrates the importance of strategic planning for both the construction and operation of the hydropower infrastructure. It further highlights the challenges to making hydropower projects more sustainable. The role of cooperation, coordination and commitment with key stakeholders throughout all of the stages of construction and operation of the hydropower projects is also emphasized.
