Over the past four years, the Joint UNDP-UNEP Poverty-Environment Action Project has been focusing on mainstreaming environmental sustainability and climate objectives for poverty eradication into development planning, budgeting and monitoring systems; public and private finance; and investment.

Building on the Poverty-Environment Initiative (PEI) legacy, PEA was uniquely placed to ensure that the environmental dimension is not left behind when addressing poverty and vice versa. Leveraging broader 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) implementation processes provided new entry points for PEA to mainstream.

Poverty-Environment Action in partnership with UNITAR has developed an Introductory Course on Sustainable Development in Practice. This introductory course teaches learners WHAT is an integrated approach to sustainable development and WHY is it needed. The course explains the rationale, drivers, challenges, and opportunities for an integrated approach to tackling poverty-environment issues. The course lays the foundations for an advanced course focused on HOW to apply the integrated approach in practice.

The joint UNDP‒UNEP Poverty‒Environment Action Project in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research has developed a set of two e‒courses:

  • Advancing Sustainable Development in Practice. This Advanced course builds upon the introductory course, teaching learners HOW to apply in practice an integrated approach to sustainable development throughout the various stages of the policy and project cycle, including analysis, dialogue, planning, financing, communicating, monitoring, and evaluation. The course contains tools, tips, and methods for applying sustainable development in practice.
