About the Working Group on Transforming the Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development: 

On 26 January 2022, the UN Secretary-General created a UN Working Group on Transforming the Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development for a more collaborative and impactful service delivery offer in this space. The creation of the Working Group was an outcome of five Regional Roundtables and a Global Roundtable on Extractive Industries held in 2020 and 2021, which culminated in a Policy Brief

The purpose of the Working Group is to:   

  1. Coordinate extractives-related work across the UN and beyond through joint work, planning and collaboration.  

  1. Serve as an information and knowledge hub to scale up and replicate best practices and build synergies with existing initiatives.   

  1. Provide policy advice and technical assistance to stakeholders in the extractives sector.  

  1. Assist in integrating work on the extractive industries into other UN-wide initiatives such as the Financing for Development Initiative (FfDI). 

The Critical Energy Transition Minerals (CETM) Initiative: 

The CETM Initiative is led by the SG’s Working Group will work closely with partners that include UNODC, UNICEF, UN Women, IRENA, IEA, the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States, UN Country Teams, The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance, Earthworks, the IFC, the World Bank, WEF, ICMM, the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development, and the Principles for Responsible Investment.. 

Secretariat of the Working Group: 

The Working Group is co-chaired by the UN Regional Economic Commissions (UNECA, UNECE, UNECLAC, UNESCAP and UNESCWA), UNDP, and UNEP on a rotating basis. Other members of the group include UNCTAD, ILO, UNIDO, and OHCHR. 

About the Knowledge Hub: 

This Knowledge Hub for Transforming the Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development is an online space for sharing and expanding the knowledge base of the UN system to support countries in managing their mineral resources, including critical energy transition minerals, to achieve the SDGs. 

The Knowledge Hub is part of a collaborative initiative led by the United Nations Secretary General’s Working Group on Transforming the Extractives for Sustainable Development, and partners. 

It currently features information on emergent work such as: 

  • A joint UN Framework of Action on Just Transitions for Critical Energy Transition Minerals 

  • A UN CETM Toolkit 

  • An online resource library.
