GGKP expands to over thirty partners

GGKP News

The Green Growth Knowledge Platform (GGKP) recently expanded and now includes over 30 of the world’s leading institutions and organizations active in areas related to green growth and green economy. In an effort to bridge knowledge gaps across economic and environmental disciplines, these GGKP partners are committed to collaborating in the generation, management and sharing of green growth knowledge.

The most recent organizations joining the GGKP partnership cover a diverse range of green growth sectors, themes and regions, and include: the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP), the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE).

The IMF brings to the GGKP a profound expertise in the use of fiscal instruments (emissions taxes, trading systems with allowance auctions, fuel taxes, charges for scarce road space and water resources, etc.) for promoting green growth. In particular, the IMF promotes the use of fiscal reform to address environmental problems through a mixture of analytical work, technical assistance and outreach activities.

ICTSD promotes sustainable development through international trade policies, working with policymakers, influencers and stakeholders to increase their knowledge and understanding of the linkages between these areas. Through its research, publications and events, ICTSD has built up a solid track record in the areas of climate change, trade and sustainable energy.

REEEP works as a market catalyst for clean energy in developing countries and emerging markets. In this role, it acts as a funder, information provider and connector for up-scaling clean energy business models. To date they have disbursed €18.6 million for more than 180 projects in 58 countries, leveraging another €36.3 million in co-funding.

UNECA's mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its 54 member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development. In 2012, UNECA established the Green Economy and Natural Resources Section (GENRS) within its Special Initiatives Division, the main objective of which is to contribute to knowledge on and enhance understanding of the implications of the green economy for Africa's transformation.

UNECE aims to promote economic integration and sustainable development across its 56 member States in Europe, North America and Central Asia. Among a broad range of activities, promoting the transformation towards the green economy has become a major focus of work at the regional level, in particular in the follow-up to the Rio+20 Conference. A key example of its recent work includes the UNECE Green Economy Toolbox, a practical one-stop tool providing information and guidance on the green economy that was launched online in 2013. The toolbox offers numerous UNECE tools, such as guidelines and policy recommendations, for different stakeholders, including governments, businesses, academia, and non-governmental organizations.

The GGKP is working with these and its other partners to promote collaboration and coordinated research on a number of priority themes, including green growth indicators and measurement, trade and competitiveness, green technology and innovation, and fiscal instruments.
