100 million jobs worldwide could be created in sustainable energy and circular economy by 2030, but this requires investments in upskilling and reskilling. The ambition of the joint initiative with ILO, UNICEF and UNEP (GO4SDGs), is one of the two legacy initiatives of S+50 to contribute to a just transition to a low-carbon and circular economy supporting to solve the triple planetary crisis. The side event at Stockholm+50 that happened on 2 June convened key stakeholders to discuss the next steps in securing green jobs for youth, leading up to the Pact’s launch at COP 27.
As a legacy of Stockholm+50 UNEP, ILO and UNICEF/Generation Unlimited have joined forces to develop a ‘Green Jobs for Youth Pact,’ calling on all actors to accelerate the creation of more and better jobs for youth. Working with and for young people, it is a bold and unique partnership for action to close the skills gap in developing countries, targeting climate-vulnerable sectors and contributing to a systemic change harvesting benefits for people, the planet and prosperity.
During COP27 in November 2022, the Pact is launched and promoted through several events by the UN agencies and their key partners (including governments, social partners, youth, and the private sector). This side-event brought both high-level speakers as well as national and operational experts. The event’s purpose was to cover the youth employment and climate action nexus holistically, ranging from global policy perspectives to national lessons learned.
