There is growing interest among Pacific Island nations to explore municipal waste-to-energy options that reduce the need for landfills and dependence on diesel importation for electricity generation.
This is reflected in the Cleaner Pacific 2025: Pacific Regional Waste and Pollution Management Strategy 2016–2025, which was developed for and in consultation with Pacific Island nations. By addressing waste, chemicals and pollutants, the strategy aims to reduce associated threats to sustainable development of the region.
This report from the PacWastePlus programme along with a summary presented in an information booklet, provides decision-makers, technical specialists and interested community members from Pacific Islands with an overview of options, and an analysis of their potential applicability for large population centres, remote islands and atoll nations.
In addition, the report specifies important considerations using the PESLTE framework (Political, Environmental, Social, Technological, Legal and Economic).
