Despite the global economic downturn, Peru has managed to maintain a positive and stable rate of economic growth, which has led to significant progress in reducing poverty. However, the current economic model is mainly based on the exploitation and exportation of raw materials, and on other resource intensive activities that are causing the degradation of the Peruvian environment.

By reviewing the current institutional, legal and industrial situation, the report Peru: The Transition to Green Industry - Perspectives from the Manufacturing Industry analyses the potential for green industry in Peru. The report reveals that mining, agriculture and the extraction of oil and natural gas are the most resource intensive activities in Peru; whereas exports are calculated to account for as much as 80% of the domestic extraction of natural resources. Considering this context, the report underlines that the transition to a green economy will especially require improvements in the resource efficiency of the manufacturing sector, with particular attention to the metalworking, the cement, and the forestry  industries. For each of these industries the report offers an overview of other country’s best practices. Finally the report ends by offering a series of recommendations for the sustainable future of Peru.
