On 28 July 2022 (11:00 - 12.30 PM EAT, UTC +3), Poverty-Environment Action for Sustainable Development Goals (PEA) hosted a webinar and launched the Technical Handbook on Issuing Sustainable Municipal Bonds in South Africa, with support from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) project Green Economy Transformation implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), UNEP on behalf of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV), in cooperation with the South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, UNEP South Africa, and the Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE). The Handbook aims to help South African Municipalities to determine whether a Sustainable Bond is a suitable tool for financing their climate change and environmental projects. It provides decision-making guidance and outlines a step-by-step process of preparing for, issuing, and managing a Sustainable Bond.
The webinar was attended by about 74 participants and featured interventions by representatives of UNEP, GIZ, the Department of Forestry, Fisheries & Environment of South Africa, the National Treasury of South Africa, and UNDP South Africa.
