Kazakhstan commits to prioritize nature-based solutions in infrastructure. Within the framework of the national project "Green Kazakhstan", in order to achieve the Task of preserving the ecosystems of the country's water bodies, an inflow into Lake Balkhash of at least 12 km3/year will be planned. It is also planned to increase the volume of the Northern Aral Sea by 35% (from 20 to 27 km3). Four lakes (Kopa, Borovoe, Shchuchye and Shalkar) will be cleaned and restored. Measures have been taken to reduce the volume of fresh water intake in industry by 1.3 km. For additional accumulation of water with a volume of 1.7 km3, 9 reservoirs will be built. It is planned to increase the country's forest cover up to 5% by 2025 by planting 2 billion trees. The commitment falls under focus area 3. It is relevant to SDGs 9, 13, 14 and 15. The commitment is part of the Nicosia call 2022.

CAREC commits to support of the Central Asia Nexus Dialogue: Fostering Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus and Multi-Sector Investment. The Action offered an innovative approach in order to find effective solutions to the problems of different level. Water-Energy-Food-Environment Nexus (WEFE Nexus). The Action supports establishment and operation of intersectoral working groups, implementation of demo projects and elaboration of investment project ideas to demonstrate applicability and feasibility of WEFE Nexus approach. The commitment falls under focus areas 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8 and 9. It is relevant to SDGs 13, 15 and 17. Partners include WEF related line ministries and experts, local authorities, CA Academic Network and International Financial Institutions (IFIs). This commitment is part of the Nicosia call 2022.

CAREC commits to support green economy and climate action through implementation of the “Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for the Aral Sea Basin” (CAMP4ASB) of the World Bank’s International Development Association and Green Climate Fund in 2016-2024. CAMP4ASB provides key stakeholders in CA countries with regionally-coordinated access to enhanced climate change information services, scaled up investment and capacity building activities. As a whole, this allows for a more effective response to common climate challenges. The project implementation period is August 2016 – May 2024, and it is funded by the International Development Association and Green Climate Fund. The project’s primary piloting areas are Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The commitment falls under focus areas 2, 3, 9. It is relevant to the SDGs 7, 13, 17. Partners include IFAS, IСWC, ICSD, Hydromets, Ministries of Environment Protection, Energy, Economy, State Statistics Committees, and ICARDA. The commitment is part of the Nicosia call 2022.

CAREC commits to establishing a sustainable transparency framework at the governmental level of the Central Asian Region to assess the environmental impact of climate actions and policies in order to help countries to take more ambitious climate actions and develop their NDCs in accordance with robust data. Strengthening capacity for greenhouse gas monitoring, reporting and verification MRV through the best available tools and methodologies. This is done through the establishment of the Regional Climate Action Transparency Hub (ReCATH) in Central Asia by the International Climate Action Transparency Hub (ICAT). The commitment falls under focus area 9. It is relevant to SDGs 13 and 17. The commitment is part of the Nicosia call 2022.

The Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan commits to establish an International Center for Green Technology and Investment.

The center will be established as an information, education and capacity-building tool. It will cover seven main activity areas: Power sector transformation, sustainable urban development, green business development, transfer and adaptation of green technologies and best practices, development of green funding, development of renewable energy sources, and capacity-building for green growth.

Kazakhstan commits to improving the welfare of the population and the quality of the environment through cost-effective measures that mitigate pressure on the environment. The measures will include improvements to the waste management system, increases in energy savings and efficiency, improvements to the use of water, and the development of sustainable and productive agriculture. The commitment also includes the modernization of infrastructure through upgrades and new construction. Kazakhstan’s commitment will result in the transition of the Kazakh economy to a new economy model by increasing welfare and quality of life of the population. This will ensure Kazakhstan’s entry into the top 30 most developed countries of the world while minimising the degradation of natural resources and impacts to the environment. In addition, the commitment will enhance Kazakhstan’s national security, including water security.

Implementing partners include the Kazakhstan government, local authorities, the business community, non-governmental organisations, international organisations and financial institutions.
