Kazakhstan commits to prioritize nature-based solutions in infrastructure. Within the framework of the national project "Green Kazakhstan", in order to achieve the Task of preserving the ecosystems of the country's water bodies, an inflow into Lake Balkhash of at least 12 km3/year will be planned. It is also planned to increase the volume of the Northern Aral Sea by 35% (from 20 to 27 km3). Four lakes (Kopa, Borovoe, Shchuchye and Shalkar) will be cleaned and restored. Measures have been taken to reduce the volume of fresh water intake in industry by 1.3 km. For additional accumulation of water with a volume of 1.7 km3, 9 reservoirs will be built. It is planned to increase the country's forest cover up to 5% by 2025 by planting 2 billion trees.
The commitment falls under focus area 3.
It is relevant to SDGs 9, 13, 14 and 15.
The commitment is part of the Nicosia call 2022.
