Organisation:
ENVIRON Australia

This report covers a review of data on the management of healthcare waste and its disposal, as part of a broader strategy of improving waste management in Pacific Island countries, and specifically to assist in establishing sustainable healthcare waste management. It presents findings of an assessment conducted for Tonga, including recommendations and a proposed implementation plan for each recommendation to achieve sustainable management of healthcare waste in the country.

Recommendations for Tonga include the need to:

  • Develop a healthcare waste management plan, specific to each healthcare facility
  • Make available procurement of consumables (segregation and storage)
  • Develop and deliver a sustainable structured healthcare waste training programme to all hospital personnel and personnel from other stakeholders
  • Improve treatment infrastructure that reduces the potential hazard posed by healthcare waste, while protecting the environment
  • Provide procurement of consumables, such as appropriate PPE including overalls/protective clothing.
