Build Back Better: Using Green and Digital Technologies to Reduce Food Waste at the Consumer Level - Case Study: Bangkok, Thailand

In 2020, Bangkok generated 3.47 million tons of municipal solid waste, or 9,519 tons per day - more than half of that amount was food waste. Some of the challenges the city faces are lack of separate waste collection, inadequate policy incentives, limited awareness and understanding of the food waste problem, and absence of suitable technology and data scarcity.

This case study shows how Bangkok can harness green and digital technologies to reduce food waste at the consumer level as well as contribute to the SDGs and climate goals, and build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic. It is one of five cities in five regions assessed in the UNEP-led Build Back Better: Using Green and Digital Technologies to Reduce Food Waste at Consumer Level project.
