Using Green and Digital Technologies to Reduce Food Waste at the Consumer Level - Case Study: Belgrade, Serbia

There is no system to separate the collection of biodegradable household waste in the Serbian capital of Belgrade, with most waste disposed of in landfills, and only 5% is recycled. More efforts are needed to raise awareness and educate relevant stakeholders and consumers on food waste, and national legislation and regulation could provide an enabling environment for consumer food waste reduction and prevention.

This case study shows how Belgrade can harness green and digital technologies to reduce food waste at the consumer level as well as contribute to the SDGs and climate goals, and build back better from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Belgrade is one of five cities in five regions assessed in the UNEP-led Build Back Better: Using Green and Digital Technologies to Reduce Food Waste at Consumer Level project.
